This quote arrived in this morning's First Impression email from Fast Company:
"We manage our companies through a series of delusional cliches."
- Brad Blanton, Psychotherapist
When I first saw it, just for a brief second, I thought I saw the word "churches" instead of "companies".
Posted by mike at April 13, 2004 07:10 AM | TrackBackYour fussy sister here - again - it should say "some churches".....
Posted by: Heather Field on April 13, 2004 07:47 AMHey - I'm just telling you what I saw!
Posted by: Mike on April 13, 2004 08:03 AMYeah.
Posted by: Missy on April 13, 2004 09:06 AMI hear you - i'll just tell you what we live - and that isn't it.
and no Robert -I won't go on a Meeting House rampage - promise - just seems like all "church" getting lumped together......
Can they help with other types of delusional cliches like "Montreal Canadiens ... greatest hockey team of all time"?
Posted by: gord on April 13, 2004 09:21 AMNow THAT's a heresy.
Posted by: Mike on April 13, 2004 09:50 AMHello. Just having a randomly-surf-internet-blogs day. Mostly to procrastinate. Thought yours looked pretty interesting. I like the layout. Just wondering if you have a profile or anything to tell a bit about yourself.
Have a great day!
Stanley Cup Championships:
Montreal Canadiens 24
Toronto Arenas/St. Pat's/Maple Leafs 13
Detroit Red Wings 11
Boston Bruins 5
Edmonton Oilers 5
NY Rangers 4
NY Islanders 4
Chicago Blackhawks 3
New Jersey Devils 3
Montreal Maroons 2
Philadelphia Flyers 2
Pittsburgh Penguins 2
Calgary Flames 1
Dallas Stars 1
The Leafs could win the cup every year for the next 10 years (which at their current pace of 1 championship every 37 years and counting would take 370 years + ) and STILL be #2...
Posted by: robert on April 13, 2004 12:23 PMYou guys are wrecking my heresy...
Posted by: Mike on April 13, 2004 12:35 PMHe started it.
Posted by: robert on April 13, 2004 12:44 PMHey, how come you didn't include the Montreal Maroons in the total. Would have given you 26!!
And while we're on that ... THE MAROONS is a much better name for the team!
Posted by: gord on April 13, 2004 01:08 PMHow sad. How very sad. Who needs the Maroons? The Habs swamp the Arenas/St. Pat's/Maple Leafs all by themselves.(BTW, Maroons refers to the colour of their uniforms)
But Gord, you should ask yourself "what do Ihave against the Canadiens? Is it the tradition of excellence, the proud heritage? Is it the fire of the Rocket? The quiet elegance of Beliveau? The dash of Lafleur?"
Granted, none of these guys could hold a candle to Tiger Williams, Tie Domi or Harold Ballard...
We should ALL aspire to as great as the Habs' tradition. As the inscription on their dressing room wall proudly says (from In Flanders Field):
"To you, with Failing Hands we throw the Torch,
Be Yours to hold it High"
Gord, you disappoint me.
(that said, I still think this could be the Leafs' year)
Posted by: robert on April 13, 2004 01:47 PMI hear Mike Ribeiro will be holding the torch high again tonight ... sorry ... getting nasty now isn't it!
Posted by: gord on April 13, 2004 01:50 PMyes, he will. The same way Darcy Tucker's "broken shoulder" healed in 48 hours two years ago...
Posted by: robert on April 13, 2004 01:53 PMI get First Impressions, as well, and was startled by the same thing. Also...one of their recent offerings (like maybe today...what you mention...I'm still on drugs from last week's surgery...and...this day has been way to full) was an article on truth telling...like I've not heard churches rarely speak of. Deep down I think most evangelicals are really afraid of the truth.
Posted by: Wes on April 13, 2004 03:56 PMThanks for wrestling this thing back from the brink, Wes!
And hello, Running To Stand Still! We're always glad to make new friends here - thanks for swinging by. I'ev written bits and pieces before, but no, I don't really have an "about me" page. I'm clueless about a lot of things in Movable Type, and setting up a separate, static page would be one of them! Maybe someone out there can give me some guidance...
Posted by: Mike on April 14, 2004 08:43 AM"Deep down I think most evangelicals are really afraid of the truth."
i too have found this to be shockingly true. i've done a lot of thinking on this and wonder if it might come from the generation of the 'scopes monkey trials' - when christianity was 'rocked' by the possiblity that evolution/science might actually contradict biblical truth. i fear the church went on the 'defense' not truly believing that in the end all would wash out and truth would still be truth.
maybe i'm wrong, but i see so much fear in so many denoms/sects of the church today, 'build the walls higher', 'we must protect the truth'. i guess they forgot that part about 'way, truth, life??' - when did it become 'our' job to defend the truth and not god's??
i love the fact that jesus asked more questions than he answered, he made the religious afraid of the truth back then too - maybe it's not an 'evangelical church' thing - who knows, maybe the church has been afraid of truth all along??
way off topic, but wes's comment jogged this in my mind and it's been brewing for a while...
Posted by: Heidi on April 14, 2004 12:59 PMWell said Heidi. Never, never be afraid of the truth or challenges to the truth. God's truth will stand the test ... or its not God's truth!
Posted by: gord on April 14, 2004 04:46 PMWell said, both of you. Although, I think the key is the fact that it is God's truth. I'm not sure we mere mortals will ever get much more of a rudimentary understanding of God's truth.
And, rather than admit that there is "mystery" in our relationship with God, I think religion tries to put's God's name on man's truth.
And, that leads us to delusional cliches, which brings us right around full circle!
Posted by: Mike on April 14, 2004 05:16 PMexactly - the mere mortal trying to make the 'mere god' into our images. we're so afraid of the 'unknown' when it should be what gets us out of bed every morning, just waiting for the truth God will reveal today.
you always make me think mike! thank you.
